The Scott van Gemert Big Band (SvGBB) is the newest addition to Melbourne’s rich big band scene. Lead by young writer and trombonist Scott van Gemert, this band showcases his unique and innovative compositional style and features some of Melbourne's best improvising and session musicians and young rising stars in the scene.
Recently graduating from the James Morrison Academy of Music in Mount Gambier (SA) with First Class Honours, Scott was the recipient of the major Academic Excellence award, as well the award for Excellence in Composition/Arranging in all three years of his Bachelor degree. He studied with the likes of Wycliffe Gordon (US), Jeff Clayton (US), Mat Jodrell, Carl Mackey, Angela Davis and James himself. Scott now returns to his home town of Melbourne to lead his biggest project yet. The SvGBB performs mainly original compositions as well as a number of unique arrangements of jazz standards.
Rapidly establishing himself as a composer and arranger on the rise, Scott has already written works for the Australian Youth Orchestra, Victorian State Schools’ Sepctacular and Melbourne’s own ATM15 Big Band. For the Generations in Jazz festival in 2016, Scott was commissioned to write for a double big band of the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band and JMA Jazz Orchestra together with featured soloists Wycliffe Gordon, Troy Roberts, Ross Irwin and James Morrison. In the following year he provided the Division 1 set piece for the festival. He has also provided freelance commercial arrangements for other Australian music directors such as Matt Amy, Trevor Jones and Rick Plummer.
“Scott van Gemert’s artistic voice is not only clear, it’s remarkable. One of the most talented and unique large ensemble composers in the country right now.” – Ross Irwin 2016"
